Ian Robertson
Ian is on the left.
For
the day job Ian Robertson is the BBC Rugby Correspondent covering both Radio and
TV. In the evening he is a very amusing, entertaining and highly articulate
after-dinner speaker,
Although
happy to accept any challenge, he specialises in Sportsmen's Dinners, golf days
(a very competitive handicap of 16) dinners and conferences for the business
world. He enjoys entertaining mixed audiences. Robertson's
entire life has been one of unexpected twists and turns; as a schoolboy
cricketer at George Watson's in Edinburgh his sixth-form batting and bowling
figures earned him an honourable mention in Wisden, as a school teacher he
introduced Tony Blair to the delights of English literature, as Richard Burton's
biographer he spent a week in Los Angeles interviewing Liz Taylor with whom he
flirted outrageously, and, as a broadcaster his emotional radio description of
Jonny Wilkinson's 2003 World Cup-winning dropped goal came second in a 5 Live
poll to find the greatest sporting commentary of all time.
"Thirty-five
seconds to go…this is the one…it's coming back for Jonny Wilkinson…he
drops for World Cup glory…it's up, it's over (accompanied by a strangled
shriek of triumph emitted by Rob Andrew at his side)…he's done it…Jonny
Wilkinson is England's hero yet again…" finishing runner-up to Brian
Johnson and Jonathan Agnew's famous, "Just couldn't quite get his leg
over…" fit of the giggles and ahead of Kenneth Wolstenholme's, "They
think it's all over - it is now…"
