| Suppliers Forum Dates & Venue Next year our Suppliers Forum will take place on Tuesday 7th October 2008. This years Suppliers Forum, being the fourth, again took place on Tuesday 9th October 2007. It was entitled: "PROMOTING PAPER - THE INDUSTRY STRIKES BACK" This Years Guest Speakers were: Armi Temmes
Dr. Armi Temmes is a Project Director at Helsinki School of Economics, Department of Organisations and Management. During 2007 she acted as a freelance specialist on environmental and sustainability issues. She worked at the University of Helsinki 1980-1988 as assistant teacher and joined Metsä-Serla Corporate R&D in 1989 to start activities in biotechnical and microbiological research and development. In 1992 she was appointed environmental manager of Metsä-Serla, in 2001 Vice President, Environmental affairs in M-real. 2004-2006 she worked as Senior Vice President, Corporate Public affairs being responsible for Corporate responsibility and lobbying coordination of M-real. Temmes is a member of the advisory board of the Finnish Environment Institute. She has chaired and been a member of several environment-related committees and working groups in Finnish and European trade unions.
Nick
Steidl
Nick left school at seventeen and went straight into the family paper business - the third generation. He worked on the agency side, H. H. Pegg Limited, helping to build up sales and increasing all service aspects of the company. In 1974 he became a Director and took up Chairmanship of the Group on the death of his father in 1980. In the next two decades sales on the agency side were increased from less than 100,000 tonnes reaching a peak in 2001 of just under 500,000 tonnes. In 1988 he was elected President of the Paper Agents Association and in 2003 he served as President of the Stationers Social Society (now Paper Industry Charitable Trust).
Frank Leerkotte
Frank
Leerkotte was born in 1960 in The
Netherlands. Frank graduated with a degree in
Business Economics at the University of Amsterdam and started his career in the
oil industry as a marketing analyst.
Michael Johnson
Michael
Johnson was appointed CEO of the BPIF
in July 2001 and took up his position on 11 September 2001.
Previously he was CEO of the Sports Industries Federation for four years
where he successfully turned it into a dynamic and respected organisation
supported by the major players of the industry. Prior to this, he served in the Royal Navy for 31 years
retiring as a Commodore in 1996. He
held numerous commands including HM Ships Orkney, Alacrity, Active, the 4th
Frigate Squadron and HMS Drake. The
final four years of his service in the Royal Navy, Mike was in charge of the
Devonport Naval Dockyard during a very difficult period in its long history.
With skill and determination the Dockyard was restructured and emerged a
much fitter and more competitive organisation than it had been previously.
David Powlson
David works for Pöyry
Forest Industry Consulting as Consultant in their London Office, with a
background in the paper industry. He studied Paper Science with Management at
Manchester University and followed this with a year working for the Technical
University of Dresden in Germany in Paper Research. His first mill experience
was when he came back to the UK to work for BPB at their Purfleet Mill (near
London) making gypsum liner, where he stayed for some seven years. He was
involved in numerous mill developments – to the machine, fibre plant and
effluent plant. By the time David left the mill in 2003 he had been
promoted to a production manager. He then went to work for the UK Government’s
recycling function, known as WRAP where he was the UK’s Paper Recycling
Manager. In this role he managed paper related projects ranging from €25M
investments to communication activities. Now at Pöyry since earlier in 2006,
David works with and for the paper industry, having undertaken numerous
assignments throughout Europe and across the industry, with some particular
focus on the recycling. Programme for the Day 2007

the M25 at Junction 25 and take the A10 northbound towards Hertford. Remain on
the A10 for 12 miles to bypass Ware. Hanbury Manor is on the left-hand side,
just past the Thundridge town sign. From
the M1 at Junction 8 take the M10 then the A414 to Junction 3 of the A1(M). Go
north to junction 4 of the A1(M) and take the A414 through Hertford to join the
A10. Turn north (left) onto the A10 to bypass Ware for 2 miles.
